Tom grew up in Vallejo, CA. At the age of eleven, he started playing golf and taking lessons from Joe Mortara Jr., and his father Joe Mortara Sr. at the Lake Chabot G.C. in Vallejo. Tom played competitive golf both locally and nationally as an amateur. Tom turned professional in 1995. he completed his "Golf Professional Training Program" in 1998. Tom plays competitive golf now in the local PGA Series Events.

Tom believes in "Tension Free Golf". His teaching method is "Sound Fundamentals".
